The MKS Gen L is an excellent mainboard replacement for a Creality Ender 3, it fixes all of the issues the Melzi board has such as limited memory, non-replaceable stepper drivers, additional connection headers (for things like BLTouch, filament runout sensor, additional fans, UART mode stepper drivers, etc.), and is an easy upgrade to make. The touch screen is really nice as well, you can easily add your own custom buttons and choose from a few different styles, just search google for "MKS TFT28 firmware" to download the latest version. For the MKS Gen L I'd recommend using Marlin firmware and you can download the latest version by searching for "Marlin firmware" on Google. For stepper drivers I'm using the Fystec brand TMC2208 drivers and my machine is completely silent (aside from fans) during a print. They are a bit more expensive but well worth it. If you purchase this be sure to check out the "Teaching Tech" youtube channel for guides on installation, firmware, stepper driver selection, and customization, his videos are very helpful!
